What you'll need

Get these ready before you press so every piece comes out the same.

Heat press

Any press works, from hobby to industrial. A household iron also works for small jobs.

Required

Parchment or Teflon sheet

Protects the garment while pressing and sets your finish: parchment for matte, Teflon for gloss.

Required

Heat-resistant tape

Keeps the transfer from shifting. Only needed for hats, curved items or iron use.

Optional

A test garment

Press one piece first to dial in your press before running a full order.

DTF Transfers · Step by step

5 steps to a perfect press

  1. Step01

    Skip the pre-press

No need to preheat the garment or remove moisture first. You can pre-press if you like, but it's optional.

  2. Step02

    Place your design

Cut out your design, then lay the transfer ink-side down exactly where you want it. Tape is optional and only needed for hats or curved items.

  3. Step03

    Press it

Cover with parchment paper or a protective sheet and press. Use 290–310°F for cotton and blends, and drop to 265°F for polyester and delicate fabrics. You can adjust time or pressure slightly. Just avoid overheating the garment.

    290–310°F (143–154°C) Polyester & delicates: 265°F (129°C) 15 seconds Heavy pressure
  4. Step04

    Peel hot or cold

Peel right away for a hot peel, or let the garment cool completely before a cold peel. Both work. Peel slowly and watch the design as you go to make sure every part has stuck.

If any part lifts, lay the film back down and re-press for 5–10 seconds with a little extra pressure, or raise the heat by 15°F. Multiple presses won't damage the transfer.
  5. Step05

    Finish with a final press

Cover the design and press again for 5 seconds. This softens the print, improves durability and sets your finish.

5 seconds Parchment = matte Teflon = gloss

Matte finish

Post-press with parchment paper (or a single layer of fabric). Softer feel, less shine.

Gloss finish

Post-press with a Teflon sheet. Shinier look that makes colors pop.

Troubleshooting

Not sticking? Quick fixes.

Most issues come down to heat, time or pressure. Here's what to adjust.

Part of the design lifted when I peeled

Lay the film back down and re-press 5–10 seconds with a little more pressure, or raise the heat by 15°F. Peel more slowly next time.

The garment scorched or got shiny marks

Too much heat for that fabric. Always cover with parchment or a protective sheet, and test on a scrap piece first. For polyester and delicate fabrics, press at 265°F.

Edges or fine lines aren't fully attached

Usually a pressure issue. Make sure the press closes evenly across the whole design, then re-press with heavy pressure.

I'm pressing a hat or curved item

Secure the transfer with heat-resistant tape so it can't shift, and use a press or platen made for the shape.

I only have an iron

An iron works too. Use heat-resistant tape to hold the transfer in place and test first. For the most consistent results, use a heat press.

The print feels stiff or too shiny

Do the 5-second final press with parchment. It softens the feel and reduces shine.

Aftercare

Keep it looking new

Pressed correctly and cared for, Top Tier transfers hold up through 50+ washes without cracking, peeling or fading. Share these tips with your customers.

Inside out

Turn the garment inside out before washing.

Cold water

Wash cold to protect the print.

Tumble dry low

Low heat only, or hang dry.

Or hang dry

The gentlest option for longest life.

UV DTF Stickers · No heat needed

Apply UV DTF in 4 steps

UV DTF stickers go on hard surfaces with pressure only. Work slowly. The key rule: peel with your eyes, not just your hands.

01

Prep and pre-squeegee

Clean the surface with soap and water or a 50/50 mix of rubbing alcohol and water. A cleaner surface means a longer-lasting sticker.

Place the sticker design-side down (white side up) and run the padded end of a squeegee firmly over it 2–4 times. Give thin parts and small text extra attention.

02

Separate the layers

Make a small tear in the white backing, away from the design. Slowly peel back the clear carrier sheet and watch that the whole design lifts with it.

If any part stays behind, re-squeegee and peel from a new angle.

03

Place it

Small designs (under 4"): place carefully with both hands.

Large designs (6" and up): start at one side and work across to avoid bubbles and shifting. Leave one corner of the carrier loose for easy peeling.

04

Finish

Squeegee firmly over the design 2–4 times. Peel the carrier sheet away slowly, checking that every part sticks.

If a spot lifts, press the carrier back down, squeegee again and peel from another angle.

Use onClean, smooth, hard surfaces. Always test on your item first.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a DTF transfer?

Direct to Film (DTF) is a printing method where your design is printed onto a film with adhesive, then transferred to materials like cotton, polyester and linen with a quick heat press.

What kind of press do I need?

Anything from a household iron to an industrial heat press. A heat press gives the most consistent, even pressure.

Can I press the same transfer more than once?

Yes. Multiple presses won't damage the transfer, so re-pressing to fix a lifted area is safe. Just watch the garment so it doesn't overheat.

Should I peel hot or cold?

Either one works. Hot peel is faster: peel right after the press opens. For cold peel, wait until the garment has cooled completely before peeling. Use whichever fits your workflow.

What fabrics do DTF transfers work on?

Cotton, polyester, blends and even leather, on light or dark garments. Press cotton and blends at 290–310°F, and polyester and delicate fabrics at 265°F. Always test first.

Do UV DTF stickers need heat?

No. UV DTF stickers apply with pressure only, using a squeegee. They're made for clean, smooth, hard surfaces, not fabric.

What file format should my artwork be?

We prefer vector art. Raster art should be at least 300 DPI with a transparent background. Accepted files: .JPG, .PNG, .AI and .PDF. From Canva or Procreate, export as PDF for best results.

Ready for your next run?

No minimums. Build a gang sheet in minutes, or reach out if you need help dialing in your press.
